Water Powered Flashlight Lantern

If you’re looking for a flashlight with renewable energy, you’ll have plenty of options out there. Firstly there are several different sizes, but then you get to choose between solar, wind-up and shakeable. Well now you get one more choice to pick from. This flashlight is actually powered by water, which would make them highly convenient while you’re out camping.

Not only will this light work just like your average flashlight, but it also can be used as a regular lantern by just making some simple adjustments. It’s probably not going to be as great as the oversized lanterns that many people use. However, this would be better than nothing, especially if you were to put it within an emergency kit of some kind. In order to work it, you just have to fill up the battery with water. It’ll also run on beer, coke and even urine. You can purchase the NoPoPo Water-Powered Flashlight for $54 from the Japan Trend Shop.

Cyborg is no more Science Fiction

REMOTE-CONTROLLED insects may sound like the stuff of science fiction, but they have already been under development for some time now.

The creation of a cyborg insect army has just taken a step closer to reality. A research team at the University of California Berkeley recently announced that it has successfully implanted electrodes into a beetle allowing scientists to control the insect’s movements in flight. “We demonstrated the remote control of insects in free flight via an implantable radioequipped miniature neural stimulating system,” the researchers reported in their new paper for Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience. ” The pronotum mounted system consisted of neural stimulators, muscular stimulators, a radio transceiver-equipped microcontroller and a microbattery.” Eventually, the mind-controlled insects could be used to “serve as couriers to locations not easily accessible to humans or terrestrial robots,” they note

Bluetooth Ring - Amazing Gadget

Imagine receiving a call from your ring, removing it, and then turning it into a Bluetooth earpiece to take the call. That is the simple concept of The Orb, ring-shaped device that becomes an S-shaped device to fit into the ear.

The Orb has a flexible OLED that will display the caller information, calendar items, and voice-to-text information. So the next time you receive a ring, you can look at your ring.

You may notice that the opened up headset is hanging securely from the ear, but none of it is in the ear. Yeah, you don’t have to mess around with it too much, as the Orb uses bone conduction technology. Some of you have not seen bone conduction before, but it is a way of transmitting sound directly into the brain through touch.

It’s a pretty simple concept, isn’t it? The best part is the Orb is not a concept, but a device that is planned for release in 2010 for about $129. The Deluxe edition is about $175.

A Gremlin that doesnt Multiply when its wet

Have you Ever watched the Movie Gremlins years back?...It brings back memories of a cute little bugger that comes with specific care instructions, which were obviously disobeyed resulting in a whole lot of chaos in the neighborhood. Now you can take your own cuddly plush Singing Gizmo home with you. He’s a little smaller than life-size and looking a bit mischievous. Shake him and he sings the soothing song of the Mogwai while slowly rocking back and forth. Please don’t get him wet, expose him to bright lights or feed him after midnight. Pre-Historic Turtles had only Partial Shell

The mystery of the turtle shell evolution may be revealed with the discovery of the world's oldest turtle fossil, a 220 Million year old creature with only a partial shell.

The mystery of the turtle shell evolution may be revealed with the discovery of the world's oldest turtle fossil, a 220 Million year old creature with only a partial shell. The turtle fossil, found near Guangling in south-west China, is thought to be the ancestor of all modern turtles, although it differs markedly; it has teeth rather than a bony plate, the shell only covers its underside and it has a long tail. The fossil find helps to answer the key questions about the evolution of turtles.

The existing theories propose that the shell developed from plates on the skin, and was similar to the body armour found on ankylosaurs and some other dinosaurs. While another said that the shell was an extension of the backbone and ribs. The bone theory was supported by embryonic evidence; as turtles mature in the egg, their backbone expands outward and ribs broaden to meet and form a shell.

However, the latest research of the newly discovered fossil clinches in favour of the bone theory. Dr Olivier Rieppel, a researcher at the Field Museum in Chicago said that the animal's ribs are broad, but have not fused. A partial shell extends from its backbone. The bottom part of the shell is complete, but the top part isn't. Supporting the view, Dr. Wu and his colleagues, including Chinese researchers Chun Li, Li-Ting Wang and Li-Jun Zhao said this makes sense because it lived in the water, and predators would have probably attacked it from below. Hence, the discovery suggests that turtles may have first evolved in the water, rather than on land.

Dr Robert Reisz, a paleontologist at the University of Toronto said the fossil is a "really great discovery," and an important chapter in turtle history. The Paper on the find showing convincing evidence of how the protective covering evolved was published in the British journal, Nature.

Eating fish Reduces diabetic kidney disease

Eating fish twice a week may reduce the risk of kidney disease in diabetics.

A British research institute found that eating fish twice a week will actually reduce the diabetic kidney disease. This was studied from 22,000 adults and of which 517 are diabetic. Eating fish twice a week reduces the protein in the urine which is the early stage to the kidney disease.

The "unique nutrient composition of fish" may benefit kidney function by enhancing blood glucose control and improving plasma lipid profiles. In addition to eating fish, people can reduce the risk of albuminuria -- protein in the urine -- by controlling glucose, lowering blood pressure, smoking cessation and following a diabetic diet as prescribed by a doctor.

Searching Online Can help your Brain get stronger

According to latest results set to be published on the American Journal for Geriatric Psychiatry, Internet searches can actually help strengthen the aging brain - thanks to the greater mental "activity" that it undergoes while waiting for the search results and the following "scan".

Studies in the past have shown that any mentally tasking act has the capability to change the way the brain responds to the task. This is known to create a "mental reserve" that comes in handy when the brain is subjected to insult and injury. Additionally, this increase in the mental reserve is reportedly capable of lessening the effects of the inevitable - mental aging.

A recent research conducted to verify these claims threw in some interesting results. Expensive MRI equipments were used to monitor the cranial activity of two sets of people: Internet regulars and novices. As for on what basis the teams have been classified in to "regulars" and novices", regulars were those who went online at least once daily, while the novices were the ones who have never been online or use the Internet once or twice in a month.

Human Skin Cells turned into Insulin

At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of medicine, scientists have successfully transformed human skin cells into cells that can produce insulin the Harmone that is used in the treatment of diabetes.
This discovery may one day lead to new treatment or even a cure for people who are affected by diabetese. This breakthrough achievement is done by reprogramming skin cells into pluripotent stem cells, or cells that can produce any other cell type, and then inducing them to transform into cells that perform a insulin secretion.

Lead author Yi Zhang said
"Not only have we shown that we can reprogram skin cells, but we have also demonstrated that these reprogrammed cells can be differentiated into insulin-producing cells which hold great therapeutic potential for diabetes"
