It seems the ingenuity strikes again in the Wii arena. This time, Raphaël Assénat has come up with a way to connect old school Nintendo controllers to the modern day Wii. He was able to successfully connect the NES, SNES, N64 and Gamecube controllers to the current Nintendo system. Let’s face it, what’s the fun in playing retro games on the new controller. It would be so difficult having to re-learn your figuring techniques after all those years of playing your friends on the older controllers. Raphaël has created a fully detailed Do-It-Yourself documentation, showing all the steps needed to integrate the controller into the Wii. You can check out the guide here. It features detailed and clear instructions, as well as some videos to guide you along the transformation process.

Assénat came up with the idea to carry out this project when he found out that Nintendo included the option for backward control support.

Nintendo’s idea of implementing support for NES, SNES and N64 games in their new console, the Wii, is in my opinion one of their greatest ideas. As soon as I learned that it would be possible to use Gamecube controllers to play those games, I started thinking about designing an Snes/Nes controllers to Gamecube adapter which would be compatible with the Wii.
