Water Powered Calculator - Amazing

How many of you hate changing the battery in your calculator? I know that I would, were they not as a majority, solar-powered. Apparently someone has decided that light is a resource that we are using up far too quickly, and thus designed a calculator that runs off of water.

For this little guy to work, you just pour water into the rear and insert a stopper. The electrolytes in the water will take care of the rest. I’m seriously wondering what kind of person would believe that their calculator would need a power source other than light. Seriously, how would you use this without working in an area with plenty of light? If you’re intrigued by this water-powered gadget, you can pick one up for $8.99. Personally, I’ll wait for these guys to make a car that’s powered by water.

The AquaDom - Largest Cylindrical Fishtank

The Radisson SAS Hotel in Berlin is (for some reason) home to the largest cylindrical fishtank in the world. The AquaDom is 25 meters high (that’s over 80 feet), contains 1 million liters (260,000 gallons) of salt water, and is home to 2,500 fish (56 species in all). There’s also a glass elevator that goes up the middle if you want to swim with the fishies without getting wet. Two full time divers are tasked with keeping the residents healthy and happy, which might sound like a fun job, but I bet they have to keep the glass clean as well. In addition to being the largest cylindrical fishtank, the AquaDom is also the largest acrylic glass cylinder in the world, with a diameter of 11 meters. The whole thing cost nearly 13 million euros back in 2003, but you can book a fishtank-view room in the hotel for considerably less than that (about 260 euros on a weekend). Nintendo WII can play Music too

The Nintendo Wii isn’t about to be left behind in terms of all round entertainment. While most of us would associate the Wii with some sort of arm flailing action in the living room (more fun when you’ve had a couple of beers IMHO), MP3tunes has taken a different step by allowing Wii owners to use the device’s controller to wirelessly stream their personal music collection from their own Music Lockers. Tracks are all stored in the MP3tunes Music Lockers which incidentally, can also be played on the PS3, a range of Windows Mobile devices and Internet radios among others, courtesy of MP3tunes’ open API.

According to Michael Robertson, CEO of MP3tunes, “The Wii is the latest popular gaming device that, with MP3tunes’ technology, actually becomes a home stereo system. Consumers shouldn’t be limited in where or how they enjoy their personal music collections, and we will continue to announce new ways MP3tunes is fulfilling its vision of giving people access to all of their music, anywhere they go.”

Currently, MP3tunes is offering free playlists that can be sideloaded to the Music Locker for immediate access on the Wii as well as various compatible devices, Emily Richards, President of MP3tunes commented, “”To demonstrate how simple it is to add playlists to a Locker, we’ve created, in partnership with CDBaby, a terrific New Year’s Eve music set for our customers. With just one click, this New Year’s playlist is sideloaded to your Music Locker for access on dozens of devices — with no listening limits.” While listening to music is a nice function to have on your console, I would say the Wii concentrates much more on being a gaming machine than anything else, so having the abilities like what MP3tunes offer isn’t really going to make more Wii fly off the shelves (if you can find one, that is). Human Faced Koi variety

Ornamental carp, also known as "koi", are bred in both Japan and Korea for collectors. These koi, though, look like they were bred on the Island of Doctor Moreau! I wonder if Monty Python know about these weird human-faced fish when they were creating the famous fish tank scene from their classic film, "The Meaning of Life"?

The human-faced carp are definitely products of selective breeding by humans. Generations of fish were bred to emphasive their "human" features, most notably their forward-facing eyes. These features would likely be a disadvantage in the wild - but then, these particular fish aren't going anywhere near the wild anytime soon.

The so-called "Human Face Fish" are hybrids of common carp and leather carp. The fish rather large - about 32 inches long - and it's said that their heads have begun to take on a more human look as time goes by! When will it end? New species of Largest Spitting Cobra found

The newly anointed Ashe's spitting cobra, or large brown spitting cobra (Naja ashei), can reach lengths of more than 9 feet (274 centimeters) and is believed to deliver more venom with a single bite than any other cobra on the planet.

The aggressive reptile was previously identified as a brown-colored variant of the black-necked spitting cobra, though researchers had long suspected that it merited its own species. Now blood and tissue analysis have confirmed this theory to be true.

The snake dwells in the dry lowlands of north and east Kenya, as well as in Uganda and Ethiopia.

It is named after James "Jimmy" Ashe, a prominent herpetologist who founded the Bio-Ken snake farm and research center in Watamu, Kenya, where the snake is commonly found. Bio-Ken milks snakes for their venom and sends it to labs to develop antivenin.

The findings were first published earlier this year in the animal taxonomy magazine Zootaxa by researchers at the University of Wales and the Biodiversity Foundation for Africa in Buluwayo, Zimbabwe.

But they gained wider notice on Friday when the researchers announced the new species through the nonprofit conservation group WildlifeDirect.

Royjan Taylor, the director of Bio-Ken, said the paper's authors had asked him to wait several months to give time for other herpetologists to challenge their findings. None did.

Spitting cobras eat eggs, carrion, snakes, lizards, and birds. Their venom has two uses: to kill prey and for defense. The reptiles can spray venom several yards and usually aim for the attacker's eyes, giving the snake the best chance for escape.

Two Gaming Giants Merge

Two gaming giants, Activision and Vivendi Games, which includes Blizzard Entertainment are merging together and forming one monolithic gaming company called Activision Blizzard. The worth of the deal between two companies is almost $20 billion in which Activision CEO Bobby Kotick will take place as CEO, while Bruce Hack, CEO of Vivendi will become the Chief Corporate Officer of the combined company. In the new company, Vivendi will own approximately 68 percent share.

It is expected that the new company, Activision Blizzard will generate revenue of approximately $3.8 billion this year. Under this deal, the shares of Vivendi Games will be transferred as 295.3 million new shares of Activision common stock. Vivendi will purchase 62.9 million newly issued shares of Activision common stock at a price of $27.50 per share. The focus has been firmly placed on the two entities from which the new company takes its name: Activision and Blizzard.

Both companies are successful in the gaming world and both will bring their expertise to the table. Now, Activision has one of the most profitable online games in the world with World of Warcraft and it is also controlling Blizzard’s other AAA franchises like the upcoming StarCraft 2. World of WarCraft may be reaching market saturation on the PC side of things. With the gigantic launch of the aforementioned StarCraft 2, Blizzard now has the possibility of bringing some of its flagship properties to the console world in an effort to extend its reach.

Welcome to Tokyo's 12th annual Robo-One Grand Championship match, where two-legged robots fight, throw balloons at each other, and even sing in a mission to become the world champ ‘bot.

Twenty-five finalist robots competed Saturday, showing off some of the latest moves originated by children, homemakers and other robot fans in the world's largest robo-market.

To win the tournament and the title of the world's strongest two-legged fighting robot, contestants need to be able to keep their balance while punching and dodging blows, and get up when pushed down.

And to kick off the action, a Christmas light-clad ‘bot named Arichyon sang "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" while a robot with a penguin head knocked it over with one punch.

World's Largest Moose is a HOTEL

Well, it was only a matter of time, I guess. The Swedish government has officially approved plans to construct the world’s largest moose. To be located on top of a mountain in northern Sweden, the “big moose” (actually named “Stoon,” which means “big one”) will stand some 150 feet high. 350 people can fit inside the moose, entering through the mouth via an elevator disguised as a tree, whereupon they can browse art displays in the twisty innards of the moose, attend concerts and conferences, or even enjoy moose munchies at restaurant in the moose’s belly. Oh, and for all of our Swedish readers (?), this is an elk to you guys, but it’s the same animal: alces alces. Construction should begin before the end of this year, and the total cost of the moose is predicted to be about $6.5 million. On the news that his project has finally been approved after three years, the creator of the moose, Thorbjörn Holmlund, says: “This is such unbelievably good news. My whole body is shaking with joy. People have really wanted to make this happen. There have been plenty of days when I have come close to crying but today I can do nothing but laugh.”

Disney's Mplayer

Aww, isn't that cute? We get warm fuzzies just looking at this mouse ears MP3 player that iriver is building for Disney, creatively dubbed the Mplayer. Sure, ergonomics are pretty much a no-go, same for pockeability, but at least the controls shouldn't be too hard to figure out, and we don't figure iriver is going to be charging too terribly much for the privilege of ownership. No word on internals, or much more launch info than "this month," but somewhere in the 512MB to 2GB-ish range seems a shoe-in for flash memory capacity. Even better news is that iriver is unveiling this one in a sort of series, which started with the NV at "-2," was followed by the D5 at "-1" and has this Disney player repping the "+1" slot.
