World's Largest Moose is a HOTEL

Moose

Well, it was only a matter of time, I guess. The Swedish government has officially approved plans to construct the world’s largest moose. To be located on top of a mountain in northern Sweden, the “big moose” (actually named “Stoon,” which means “big one”) will stand some 150 feet high. 350 people can fit inside the moose, entering through the mouth via an elevator disguised as a tree, whereupon they can browse art displays in the twisty innards of the moose, attend concerts and conferences, or even enjoy moose munchies at restaurant in the moose’s belly. Here’s a promotional video, it’s priceless:

Oh, and for all of our Swedish readers (?), this is an elk to you guys, but it’s the same animal: alces alces. Construction should begin before the end of this year, and the total cost of the moose is predicted to be about $6.5 million. On the news that his project has finally been approved after three years, the creator of the moose, Thorbjörn Holmlund, says: “This is such unbelievably good news. My whole body is shaking with joy. People have really wanted to make this happen. There have been plenty of days when I have come close to crying but today I can do nothing but laugh.”

Disney's Mplayer

img
img
img
Aww, isn't that cute? We get warm fuzzies just looking at this mouse ears MP3 player that iriver is building for Disney, creatively dubbed the Mplayer. Sure, ergonomics are pretty much a no-go, same for pockeability, but at least the controls shouldn't be too hard to figure out, and we don't figure iriver is going to be charging too terribly much for the privilege of ownership. No word on internals, or much more launch info than "this month," but somewhere in the 512MB to 2GB-ish range seems a shoe-in for flash memory capacity. Even better news is that iriver is unveiling this one in a sort of series, which started with the NV at "-2," was followed by the D5 at "-1" and has this Disney player repping the "+1" slot.

Don't under Estimate any KID

A beautiful Madam was having trouble with one of her students in 1st Grade class. Madam asked,"Boy. what is your problem?"

Boy answered, "I'm too smart for the first-grade.My sister is in the third-grade and I'm smarter than she is! I think I should be in the 4th Grade!"

Madam had enough. She took the Boy to the principal's office. While the Boy waited in the outer office, madam explained to the principal what the situation was. The principal told Madam he would give the boy a test and if he failed to answer any of his
questions he was to go back to the first-grade and behave. She agreed.

the Boy was brought in and the conditions were explained to him and he agreed to take the test.

Principal: "What is 3 x 3?"
Boy.: "9".

Principal: "What is 6 x 6?"
Boy.: "36".

And so it went with every question the principal thought a 4th grade should know. The principal looks at Madam and tells her, "I think Boy can go to the 4th grade."

Madam says to the principal, "I have some of my own questions.

Can I ask him ?" The principal and Boy both agreed.

Madam asks, "What does a cow have four of that I have only two of"?

Boy, after a moment "Legs."

Madam: "What is in your pants that you have but I do not have?"

Boy.: "Pockets."

Madam: What starts with a C and ends with a T, is hairy, oval,
delicious and contains thin whitish liquid?

Boy.: Coconut

Madam: What goes in hard and pink then comes out soft And sticky?

The principal's eyes open really wide and before he could stop the answer, Boy was taking charge.

Boy.: Bubblegum

Madam: What does a man do standing up, a woman does sitting down and a dog does on three legs?

The principal's eyes open really wide and before he could stop the answer...

Boy.: Shake hands

Madam: You stick your poles inside me. You tie me down to get me up. I get wet before you do.

Boy.: Tent

Madam: A finger goes in me. You fiddle with me when you're bored. The best man always has me first.

The Principal was looking restless, a bit tense and took one large Patiala Vodka peg.

Boy.: Wedding Ring

Madam: I come in many sizes. When I'm not well, I drip. When you blow me, you feel good.

Boy.: Nose

Madam: I have a stiff shaft. My tip penetrates. I come with a quiver.

Boy.: Arrow

Madam: What word starts with a 'F' and ends in 'K' that means lot of heat and excitement?

Boy.: Firetruck

Madam: What word starts with a 'F' and ends in 'K' & if u dont get it, u have to use urhand.

Boy.: Fork

Madam: What is it that all men have one of it's longer on some men than on others, the pope doesn't use his and a man gives it to his wife after they're married?

Boy.: SURNAME.

Madam: What part of the man has no bone but has muscles, has lots of veins, like pumping, & is responsible for making love ?

Boy.: HEART.

The principal breathed a sigh of relief and said to the teacher,

"Send this Boy to
IIM AHEMEDABAD,
I got the last ten questions wrong myself!".

Man who grow roots on his hands and legs

An Indonesian fisherman who feared that he would be killed by tree-like growths covering his body has been given hope of recovery by an American doctor - and Vitamin A.

Dede, now 35, baffled medical experts when warty "roots" began growing out of his arms and feet after he cut his knee in a teenage accident.

The welts spread across his body unchecked and soon he was left unable to carry out everyday household tasks.

Sacked from his job and deserted by his wife, Dede has been raising his two children - now in their late teens - in poverty, resigned to the fact that local doctors had no cure for his condition.

To make ends meet he even joined a local "freak show", parading in front of a paying audience alongside victims of other peculiar diseases.

Although supported by his extended family, he was often a target of abuse and ridicule in his rural fishing village.

But now an American dermatology expert who flew out to Dede's home village south of the capital Jakarta claims to have identified his condition, and proposed a treatment that could transform his life.

After testing samples of the lesions and Dede's blood, Dr Anthony Gaspari of the University of Maryland concluded that his affliction is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), a fairly common infection that usually causes small warts to develop on sufferers.

Dede's problem is that he has a rare genetic fault that impedes his immune system, meaning his body is unable to contain the warts.

The virus was therefore able to "hijack the cellular machinery of his skin cells", ordering them to produce massive amounts of the substance that caused the tree-like growths known as "cutaneous horns" on his hands and feet.

Dede's counts of a key type of white blood cell are so low that Dr Gaspari initially suspected he may have the Aids virus.

But tests showed he did not, and it became clear that Dede's immune condition was something far rarer and more mysterious.

Warts aside, he had enjoyed remarkable good health throughout his life - which would not be expected of someone with a suppressed immune system - and neither his parents nor his siblings have shown signs of developing lesions.

"The likelihood of having his deficiency is less than one in a million," Dr Gaspari told the Telegraph.

Dr Gaspari, who became involved in the case through a Discovery Channel documentary, believes that Dede's condition can be largely cleared up by a daily doses of a synthetic form of Vitamin A, which has been shown to arrest the growth of warts in severe cases of HPV.

"He won't have a perfectly normal body but the warts should reduce in size to the point where he could use his hands," Dr Gaspari said.

"Over the course of three to six months the warts should be come smaller and fewer in number. He will be living a more normal life."

The most resilient warts could then be frozen off and the growths on his hands and feet surgically removed.

Dr Gaspari hopes to get the necessary drugs free of charge from pharmaceutical firms. They would then be administered by Indonesian doctors under his supervision.

Still intrigued by the origins of Dede's peculiar immune condition, the doctor would like to fly him to the United States for further examination, but fears the financial and bureaucratic barriers would prove too difficult to overcome.

"I would like to bring him to the US to run tests on where his immune condition has come from, but I would need funding and to get him a visa as well as someone to cover the costs of the tests," he said.

"I've never seen anything like this in my entire career."

Visual Desktop Charger

Everybody wants to be able to charge their devices wirelessly and yes there are products now that do it via induction but that's still kind of tethered. On top of that, they're all ugly and give no visual indication of charge status. That's why this bird-bath charger by Sun Kyung Kim is just brills.

The ZERO House

zero_house_01.jpg

The idea of home self sufficiency isn't new. I remember conceptual homes in the 60's proposing the same idea but it does bring to question, why don't we see more self sufficient homes being built now? Why are we still reliant on grid power, city pluming, trash services? It would seem technology is at a point now where all those variables can be solved in the ultimate equation of self sufficiency. The Zero House is a good idea just waiting to happen.

zero_house_03.jpg

The Zero House demonstrates just how future homes can be built anywhere without the need for city utilities. There's a large solar array which doubles as the roof capable of collecting enough energy to power the house for a week without sunlight. Water comes from rain which filters thru a 2,700 gallon cistern. The 2 bedrooms, kitchen, and living area exist as modules, each with their own user controlled climate zones. Those modules are flanked by outdoor decks cleverly placed in areas to act almost like additional living areas. All trash and waste goes to the foundation where it's turned into compost that can be used for gardening and growing food.

zero_house_02.jpg

Although the design is very modern if not futuristic, there's no reason why the proposed technologies couldn't be integrated into traditional architecture. I wonder if the freeing of homes from the "grid" is more of a logistic reason and if so, the leaders of this country need to step back at look at the bigger picture.

Around 3500 Chinese Babies Named “Olympics”

There has been a lot of crazy stuff going on in China in anticipation for the 2008 Olympics. None quite so strange as this story.

Nearly 3,500 children, since the year 2000, have been named after the 2008 Olympics.

olympics-2008.jpg

3,500 were named “Aoyun”, meaning Olympics, in 2000 when the bid first came up to have the Olympics in China.

Additionally, more than 4,000 people have been named after the “Five Friendlies.” The Five Friendlies are 5 different animated characters that play in Chinese Olympics commercials.

five-friendlies.jpg

The names are Bei Bei (880 people), Jing Jing (1,240), Huan Huan (1,063), Ying Ying (624) and Ni Ni (642). When put together, the phrase translates to “Beijing welcomes you!”

Another USB junk i found on the net

USB Ferris Wheel

Do you ever see a gadget that makes you stop and wonder what purpose its inventor was hoping it would serve? That’s exactly what the USB Ferris Wheel did for me. You’ll probably notice something that appears to be a phone docked next to the Ferris wheel, and that’s exactly what it is. But what could a Ferris wheel and a phone have to do with each other?

If you guessed that the Ferris wheel spins when a call is received, then you’re better off than I was, because I was clueless. I’m not really sure how it works since there’s no mention of it syncing with the phones, so it must be for use with VoIP service. If you have the room for a pointless gadget on your desk, you can pick one of these up for $27.
