Two Headed Turtle

They say two heads are better than one, but this rare turtle doesn't seem to know whether it's coming or going - slowly, either way.

The two-headed red slider turtle has turned up at a reptile centre in Pennsylvania, where owners are amazed by its freak appearance. The unnamed curiosity has two heads on opposite sides of a single shell, as well as six legs and a combined tail.

A collector in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, passed the freak of nature to Big Al's Aquarium Supercenter in East Norriton. Jay Jacobi, the shop's exotic reptile manager, said: "The two heads seem to have their own thoughts, operating independently. "But sometimes they seem to put their two heads together and move in the same direction, feed together, walk together." Three names are in the running for the turtle.

These include Gemini, after the Zodian twins symbol, and Blinky, the name of a three-eyed, radioactive fish in an episode of The Simpsons. The store is also pondering calling the turtle Limerick, after a nuclear plant in the region, or Them. A two-headed tortoise was found in South Africa in 2003, with another turning in Dorset the following year.

Audio Cassette MP3 player

cassette-mp3-player.jpg

I haven't seen the retro look blend better with any product in a long time than it does with the Cassette MP3 player. This gadget looks like a normal cassette tape on the outside but is actually an mp3 player. The camouflage design is not without functional advantages too and not only do you get the cool retro look with the cassette casing, but you can also use the player as a car cassette, or with any cassette player, or as a normal mp3 player.

Expect no frills with this gadget & no expensive LCD screen, no built-in memory (you will have to use your own SD cards in the card slot provided), and PC interface is via USB. Which obviously means it will also go very easy on your wallet (well, the upfront investment at least). If you are on the lookout for a cheap, no-frills player and are not too particular about the specs or the brand, this one is well worth trying.

Boy Swallows 100 Tadpoles to cure Rashes

Pang Pang, a 9 year-old kid from China, swallowed over 100 tadpoles in an effort to cure his rash.

233a.jpg
“I was so scared that the tadpoles will become frogs in my stomach?”

His grandmother had overheard from neighbors that this was a good treatment for a rash. She went right out to the local pond and grabbed a bowl full of tadpoles for her grandson. She then forced the boy to swallow 20 per day for a week.

After about 4 days Pang Pang became ill and went to the doctor. Although he was treated by the doctor, the boy was still worried that he might grow frogs in his stomach.

233c.jpg

The Chinese do use tadpoles for medical purposes but only externally and they have to be prepared in a specific way.

Poor kid will probably never listen to his grandmother again… who apparently is naive and gullible.

10 facts about Mario the Plumber

Here are 10 things you may not know about our favorite video game character Mario:

  • Mario was first seen in the video game Donkey Kong, but he was called "Jumpman." He was also a carpenter then, not a plumber.
  • Mario was named after Mario Segale, the landlord of Nintendo of America’s office, who barged in on a company meeting demanding an overdue rent.
  • Shigeru Miyamoto drew Mario as wearing a cap because he found drawing hair difficult. He also drew in the moustache, because it was easier to see than a mouth in the crude video game screen resolution back then.
  • Mario and his younger brother Luigi are known as the "Mario Brothers." This means that Mario’s last name is also Mario, so his full name is Mario Mario.
  • Mario is voice-acted by Charles Martinet, who crashed the audition for "an Italian plumber from Brooklyn" character.
  • Mario’s nemesis is Wario (a combination of “warui”, the Japanese word for bad, and Mario). Similarly, Luigi’s rival is Waluigi. Both are also voiced by Charles Martinet.
  • Mario has appeared in over 200 video games so far, has sold over 193 million units of games (all of the Mario series) and even has his own TV show. Super Mario Bros. 3 alone grossed over $500 million in USA.
  • TV Schmeve, you’re nothing till there’s an opera done on you. In 2003, Jonathan Mann of California Institute of Arts created The Mario Opera, a rock opera:

  • Super Mario Bros. theme music, written by Koji Kondo, is known worldwide. It has inspired countless fan-renditions, including one played by Zack Kim on two guitars (viewed over 4 million times on YouTube!), played by Jean Baudin on 11 string bass, beatboxed by Greg Patillo on the flute, and played by the Oregon Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra on the trombones.
  • Mario is the most famous character in the history of video games, and perhaps is the most famous character ever. In a 1990 poll by Marketing Evaluations, Mario was found to be more popular (and recognizable) among children than Mickey Mouse.

Lion Rock of Sigiriya - Srilanka

Standing tall over the surrounding plains, Sigiriya Rock offers splended views for miles in all directions. Sigiriya Rock lies on a steep mound that rises over the otherwise flat plains, and is itself a further 370 meters tall. The rock is sheer on all sides, and in many parts even overhangs the base. From the top, it is elliptical in plan. Its top is flat, and slopes gradually along the elliptical axis.

Archeological Remains at Sigiriya

The ancient king's Upper Palace is located at the flat top of Sigiriya Rock. On the middle terrace is the Lion Gate and the Mirror Wall, with its frescoes. The king's Lower Palace clings to the slopes below the rock. The moats, walls and gardens of the palace extend for a few hundreds meters from the base of the rock.

The king built his residence here to function not only as a palace, but also as fortress. The engineering ingenuity and creativity required to create this landmark still impress today's visitors. On the Upper Palace, for example, one finds cisterns cut into the rock to retain water.

The History Of Sigiriya

Sigiriya Rock may have been in use since prehistoric times. It was already a rock-shelter monastery from about the 3rd century BC. The caves within it were prepared and donated by devotees. Later King Kasyapa built the garden and palace around it. After King Kasyapa died, Sigiriya reverted to monastic use up till the 14th century, when it was finally abandoned, and was only rediscovered in 1907 by British Explorer John Still.

The Legend of Sigiriya

According to the Mahavamsa, the ancient historical record of Sri Lanka, there was once a king calleed, Kasyapa, the son of King Dhatusena. Kasyapa murdered his father by walling him alive and then usurping the throne which rightfully belonged to his elder brother Mogallana. Mogallana escaped Kasyapa's assassination attempt by fleeing to India. In India Mogallana raised an army with the intention of returning and retaking the throne of Sri Lanka. Knowing that Mogallana will return one day, Kasyapa built his palace on the summit of Sigiriya Rock as a fortress as well as a pleasure palace.

In AD 495, eighteen years afer Kasyapa seized power, Mogallana returned and declared war. At the heat of the battle, Kasyapa's elephant turned aside sensing a hidden swamp. His army though he was retreating, so they backed away, leaving him stranded. Rather than be captured, Kasyapa committed suicide by turning his sword on himself (legend said he beheaded himself). Moggallana returned the capital to Anuradapura and Sigiriya reverted into a monastery complex.

The irony of this story is that had King Kassyapa remained within the high walls of Sigiriya Rock, Mogallana would have never been able to defeat him. Some people believe that the years of waiting for an invasion had driven Kassyapa over the edge, or that Kasyapa developed a guilty consoncience over what he had done and wanted to fight his brother on an equal level. Alternative stories have the primary builder of the palace at Sigiriya Rock as King Dhatusena, with Kasyapa finishing the work in honour of his father. Another story have Kasyapa as a playboy king, with Sigiriya Rock being his pleasure palace. Still, Kasyapa's fate was nowhere less tragic. In some versions, he was assassinated by a concubine, in another he cut his own throat when isolated in his final battle.

Bath time Ducks travel more than 17,000 miles

For 15 years there have been thousands of “Made in China” bathtime ducks floating halfway around the world’s oceans. Just recently the armada of yellow rubber friends started to arrive in Clyde, Scotland and are about to begin showing up in the Glasgow river.

The mass of yellow ducks, blue turtles, and green frogs broke free from a container in Pacific ocean due to bad weather 15 years ago.

The destination was supposed to be Tacoma, Washington but instead, they have traveled over 17,000 miles landing in Hawaii and have even been iced in the Arctic. Now they’re expected to be heading to South-West England.

The toys have greatly helped scientists in researching world ocean currents. You can easily recognize the toys with the faded white colors and a “The First Years Inc” stamp, which was who the toys were made for originally.

The company was offering £50 reward for each toy found but they are worth nearly £1,000 on the market.

Baby With Elvis like Hair

Every parent hopes their baby will attract admiring glances. But adorable as she is, Katie-Lee Webster receives attention for only one reason - her spectacular shock of ginger hair. At only ten weeks old she already has the flowing locks of a child several times her age.
Red alert: Katie-Lee needs her ginger hair cut after just 10 weeks

Russ Abbot as CU Jimmy

Her mother, Stephanie Pleasance, said: "Most people when they see a baby say 'Isn't she cute?'. When people see her, they say "Look at her hair!'."

Katie-Lee's father, Danny Webster, added: "No one we've met has ever seen anything like it - we're forever being stopped in the street and asked, 'Is that a wig?'."

Indeed, some observers could draw comparisons with Russ Abbot's screen character C U Jimmy, whose ginger toupee is as outrageous as his behaviour.

Katie-Lee's hair is, of course, natural. Her father, a print worker, is a redhead so there is no mystery as to where she gets it from.

He and Katie-Lee's mother, of Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, were born almost completely bald, but their first child has had her extraordinary head of hair since day one.

It's now more than 3in long.
Having such a head start can lead to problems.

Shocked: Parents Steph Pleasance and Danny Webster with their ten-week-old daughter Katie-Lee Webster

Earlier this year Eden Lurie's hair was deemed too long and spiky when the four-month-old went to have her passport photo taken in Manchester.

Staff had to give her a virtual haircut on a computer so she did not fall foul of guidelines.

Jamie Hetherington from Northumberland caused a stir when he developed a natural Mohican look when he was four months old.
Similarly, Charlie Zecca from Gloucester boasted a Beatle-style mop before his first haircut.

Tips to Grow Healthy Hair

1. Eat adequate amounts of protein.

Protein is composed of the amino acids essential for the building of new cells, including hair. Five amino acids are of particular relevance to hair growth - cystine, cysteine, methionine, arginine and lysine.

Inadequate protein intake over a lengthy period can force hair into the resting phase with shedding a few months later. It is obvious then that sufficient portions of protein rich foods should form part of your daily diet. The best sources of dietary protein are lean meats, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, soy, nuts, grains and seeds. At least 15% of your daily calories should come from protein-rich foods.

2. Eat adequate amounts of useful carbohydrates.

Carbs are an essential source of energy and help in the growth of body tissues, including hair. They are an important source of the B vitamins that are vital to healthy hair.

It is important that you concentrate on consuming non-refined carbs rather than the sugars and white flour that are so prevalent in many over-refined carb products. You should place an emphasis on consuming vegetables, fruits, whole grains, brown rice and potatoes. It is recommended that you obtain 55-60% of your daily calories from the carbohydrates found in these foods.

3. Achieve a healthy balance of dietary fats.

Fat is used in energy production and can be found in both animal and plant foods. Your body needs sufficient levels of fat to maintain good health. That fat should be obtained from a mixture of lean animal and plant sources. Roughly 25-30% of your daily calories should come from these sources.

4. The right nutritional balance is one that suits your personal circumstances.

How much of each food group you eat depends on a host of factors including age, sex, health and level of physical activity. When choosing meals and snacks, take account of the following key principles of sound nutrition:

*
Eat a variety of foods.
*
Apply moderation to your consumption of junk foods.
*
Choose natural and lightly processed foods as often as possible.

* Do not over cook.

5. Support a nutritious diet with a few carefully chosen supplements.

Following a nutritious diet is essential for good hair health, but on its own this may not be sufficient for a number of reasons:

*
Modern farming methods may deplete the nutrient quality of food.

*
High stress levels may diminish nutrients in your body.

*
Dieting may affect nutrient levels.

*
Aging reduces the ability of our bodies to utilize certain nutrients.

*
Exercise can deplete some nutrients.

It may be sufficient to supplement with a well-balanced multi-vitamin / mineral product but a number of products are available that specifically cater for the requirements of healthy hair.

Mountain Road in UAE

WOW! Just have a look what they have created in a desert...
The Jebel Hafeet Mountain Road in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the greatest driving road in the world. Stretching for 7.3 miles and climbing nearly 4,000 feet, it boasts 60 corners and a surface so smooth that it would flatter a racetrack. It could easily be described as the eighth wonder of the world, but almost nothing is known about its creation.

The road is cut into the Jebel Hafeet Mountain , the highest peak in the United Arab Emirates , the oil-rich Persian Gulf state. The mountain spans the border with Oman and lies about 90 minutes' drive southeast of the thriving city of Dubai . It looks down upon a dusty, desert landscape that belies a nation of astonishing wealth.
